The two Celebrity Cruises ships on order will be the fourth and fifth ships in Celebrity's Edge-class series of vessels that began debuting in 2018. The first three ships in the series are Celebrity Edge, Celebrity Apex and Celebrity Beyond. Celebrity also operates three even smaller vessels — much smaller; they carry just 16 to 100 people — in the Galapagos year-round. These three vessels make up what is essentially an entirely different business for Celebrity than the mainstream, big-ship cruising that is at the core of the company. Whether you’re a stalwart Celebrity Cruises fan or you’re just intrigued by the brand and are considering booking your next cruise with Celebrity for the first time, you have plenty of ship options. Originally launched by Sun Bay Cruises in 2001, this ship received new life in 2004, when Celebrity Cruises took it over, renamed it and sent it off to the Galapagos Islands, where you’ll find the line’s other small ships and catamaran options.

The X formed a part of the original logo for the cruise line and it has been retained even when Celebrity Cruises was bought by the Royal Caribbean Group in 1997. It was originally included to tie the cruise line back to the main group. Technically, the Celebrity Cruises logo is not actually an X, but it is the Greek letter chi, which looks like an X. This is a callback to the history of the cruise line when it was first formed by the Chandris Group, a company based in Greece. Ever noticed how Celebrity Cruises has a prominent X on the funnel of their ships or as a part of the logo? In fact, in some places it’s even more prominent – the entire funnel design on Celebrity Edge, for example, is a giant glass-encased X shape.

The all-suite vessel only houses 100 guests at double occupancy, so you’ll definitely enjoy a more intimate experience than you might otherwise — and all with a Celebrity Cruises touch of luxury. Celebrity does an excellent job of combining large contemporary ships with traditional cruising. First-time or experienced cruisers looking for good service and cuisine along with large ship entertainment at a great value will enjoy a Celebrity ship.

However, each of the vessels is projected to be roughly the same size as the recently unveiled Celebrity Beyond — about 141,000 tons. To make sure you end up on the right Celebrity ship for you, it pays to study which Celebrity cruise ships are the biggest and which are the smallest before booking. Cruise Hive was established back in 2008 and among the earliest blogs in the industry. Since the start, it's been our aim to provide the latest cruise news covering all the major cruise lines.
How much does it cost to go on Celebrity Xcel?
I think the Celebrity ships look very classy - well except for those Millenium class ships that haven't been repainted and still have the gold strip. The X and the shape of the smokestack makes the ship easy to see and identify. In 2011, Celebrity Mercury was sold by Celebrity fleet to become Mein Schiff 2 for TUI Cruises.[24] The fourth Solstice-class ship the Celebrity Silhouette entered service in 2011.

Expect a more intimate experience on this ship (though not quite as intimate as what you might get on Celebrity Xploration, with its capacity for fewer than 20 guests). From 2015 to 2018, Kate McCue was the ship’s captain, and now McCue boasts the status as the first American woman to captain a mega cruise ship. This class premiered in 2018 with Celebrity Edge and it’s a class that Celebrity is still building out. The next Edge-class ship, Celebrity Apex debuted in 2020 and Celebrity Beyond debuted in 2022, with two more ships slated to join the class later. Celebrity Ascent will take to the high seas in 2024, with another, unnamed ship to follow in 2025. Celebrity also has three small ships designed for adventure cruising in the Galapagos Islands--the Celebrity Xpedition, Celebrity Xperience, and Celebrity Xploration.

Newer ships are decked out with more and more restaurants, entertainment options and even stateroom and suite options. The Celebrity brand also does a nice job of blending classic cruising elegance with top-of-the-line tech and cruising amenities. In short, Celebrity Cruises ships are, for the most part, sophisticated and the newest ships in this long-standing fleet offer all the latest, greatest and best in cruising. We're about to take our first Celebrity and all I can say is, I hope the food and service are as good as they were aboard Chandris. Its memories of my two sailings on the Britannis that made me comfortable with booking my second Celebrity cruise before I do my first 'check-out' cruise. Celebrity Beyond offers the widest range of staterooms and suites in our fleet.
Locate your stateroom, and our world-class amenities and venues throughout the ship. So we can also say that Celebrity ships rate 10 on a scale of one to ten. Just another cudo for the company that treats the cruising public so well aboard their ships. Celebrity's expedition adventure ship, the 92-passenger Celebrity Xpedition, sails the Galapagos Islands.
If you specifically want to cruise on an Edge-class ship and you have your pick between these three, go with one of the two newer options. That said, while these new ships are flashier and more luxurious, that doesn’t make them a perfect fit for every cruiser out there. If you prefer fewer crowds and are willing to give up some dining and suite options to get that more intimate environment, you may prefer one of Celebrity’s older — but still updated — ships.
The Greece-based company the Chandris Group founded the deluxe Celebrity Cruise Line in 1988, and the ships primarily sailed to Bermuda. In the Greek language, "X" translates as "Chi" in English, and Chandris used the "X" as the logo on its ships. In 1997, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line bought Celebrity Cruises and expanded the fleet significantly but retained the "X".
